Data Center migrations are bigger and more sensitive. The complexity sits in three places: custom scripts with no direct Cloud equivalent, Marketplace apps that need a vendor-supported migration path, and integrations with external systems like Salesforce, ServiceNow or your CI/CD pipeline. We audit all three upfront, decide with you between a single cutover or a phased approach, and rebuild what doesn't migrate cleanly.

Through a kick-off workshop, Modus organizes a question-and-answer session to understand your needs and the areas for improvement we can address.

3. Preparing and testing the migration in a sandbox environment
We provision a Cloud sandbox and run a complete test migration. We test data integrity, app behavior, integrations and user permissions before any production move.
4. UAT and configuration adjustments
Your team performs user acceptance testing on the sandbox. We adjust configurations based on feedback, and document every Cloud-side configuration in a runbook.
5. Plan the migration (backup, communication, timing)
We define the cutover window, communication plan, rollback strategy and downtime tolerance. Your users know exactly what to expect, and so does your IT team.
6. Perform the migration with full supervision

What is Atlassian Cloud migration?
Atlassian Cloud migration is the process of moving Jira, Confluence, Jira Service Management or Bitbucket from a self-hosted Server or Data Center deployment to Atlassian's SaaS platform. The migration covers users, projects, workflows, custom fields, attachments, Marketplace app data and integrations with external systems. A successful migration preserves data integrity, rebuilds what does not translate to Cloud, and minimizes user-facing downtime.
How long does it take to migrate from Jira Data Center to Cloud?
Most Jira Data Center to Cloud migrations take three to nine months end to end, depending on instance size, customization depth and Marketplace app complexity. A small, clean instance with under 500 users can be migrated in a few weeks. Large enterprise instances with thousands of users, custom scripts and complex integrations typically need six months or more. Dropbox migrated 3,500 users and 1.5M Jira issues with our team in five months using a phased approach.
How much does it cost to migrate to Atlassian Cloud?
Cost depends on three components: the new Atlassian Cloud subscription, the migration project itself, and any rebuild work for custom scripts or Marketplace apps that do not translate to Cloud. Atlassian Ascend program offers support and resources to help larger organizations (1,000+ users) accelerate their move. Is Atlassian Cloud compliant with HIPAA, GDPR, ISO 27001 and SOC 2?
Yes. Atlassian Cloud is certified for SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. It supports GDPR through data residency options across multiple regions, and HIPAA under Standard, Premium or Enterprise plan conditions, which require a signed Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with Atlassian. For US public sector workloads, Atlassian Government Cloud holds FedRAMP Moderate authorization. Compliance posture also depends on how your instance is configured, governed and audited post-migration.
Will my Marketplace apps work after migrating to Atlassian Cloud?
It depends on each app. Most popular Marketplace apps have a Cloud equivalent, but the data migration path differs by vendor. Some apps migrate seamlessly, others require a vendor-supported migration tool, and a few have no Cloud version and must be replaced. Marketplace apps are the single largest source of migration delays, which is why we audit every installed app upfront to identify what migrates, what gets replaced, and what we rebuild on Atlassian's Forge platform.
Can I migrate from Atlassian Cloud to another Atlassian Cloud instance?
Yes. Cloud-to-Cloud migration and site consolidation are common scenarios after mergers, acquisitions or reorganizations that leave teams with two or three separate Atlassian Cloud sites. We consolidate them into a single governed instance, merge user directories, preserve full issue history, and rebuild dashboards, permission schemes and automation rules in the destination site so reporting and governance work on day one.
What is the difference between lift-and-shift and phased migration?
A lift-and-shift migration moves your entire instance to Cloud in a single cutover, which is faster but riskier for complex environments. A phased migration moves projects, teams or business units in batches over weeks or months, allowing testing and validation at each step. Lift-and-shift suits smaller, simpler instances. Phased migration is the standard approach for enterprise Jira Data Center deployments with hundreds of projects and complex Marketplace dependencies.
Do I need a Platinum Solution Partner to migrate to Atlassian Cloud?
No, but for any non-trivial migration it is strongly recommended. Atlassian's free Jira Cloud Migration Assistant is adequate for small, clean instances. Larger Data Center migrations involve custom workflows, ScriptRunner scripts, Marketplace app dependencies and external integrations that benefit from partner expertise. What happens to my custom workflows and ScriptRunner scripts in Cloud?
Custom workflows migrate through the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant, but some post-functions and validators have no direct Cloud equivalent. ScriptRunner Cloud is a separate product with a different scripting model than ScriptRunner for Data Center, so existing scripts cannot be lifted as-is. Our engineering team audits each script, identifies which logic can be reused, which needs rewriting in ScriptRunner Cloud, and which is better rebuilt on Forge or native Cloud automation rules.
When does Atlassian Data Center reach end of life?
Atlassian Data Center reaches end of life on March 28, 2029, at 23:59 PST, when affected subscriptions and Marketplace apps will expire and environments will transition to a read-only state. Two earlier milestones matter: from March 30, 2026, new customers can no longer purchase Data Center licenses, and from March 30, 2028, existing customers can no longer purchase expansions or new Marketplace app licenses. Bitbucket Data Center is excluded and continues under a new Bitbucket Hybrid License model.
Can I test Atlassian Cloud before migrating?
Yes. Atlassian provides free Cloud migration trials that let you test the destination environment, validate JCMA pre-migration reports, and run pilot migrations on a subset of projects before committing to the full move. We typically run a sandbox migration with a representative slice of data, including the most complex workflows and Marketplace apps, so you can validate behavior in Cloud before the production cutover.
